IRC

The cbox proved immensely popular for IGNO, sparking new waves of activity by letting people chat in real time with their forum friends. However, it reached a point where cbox chats were getting too intense - arguments and interventions frequently took place there, not to mention the times when things got a bit too NSFW for comfort.

Worried that these heated topics might scare away potential new members (as well as many existing ones), IGNO decided to join the world of IRC. After hopping around popular networks like Freenode and Rizon, we eventually settled on our own server hosted by Tim and remained there comfortably until about 2015 (when we discovered Discord). In fact, so notable was its contribution to IGNO through the years that it has been preserved in IGNOLand canon in the form of 'IRC Studios', a television set-slash-hangout for IGNOites like SG2 and LG.

The IRC era turned out a great many excellent chats, and built-in client logging made it a lot more reliable to preserve them compared to cbox.
