And as I sat there making a rudimentary overworld map in my test game file using the default resources bundled with the engine, my mind somehow drifted to ‘it might be fun to make a map of IGNOLand’. This quickly snowballed out of control and before I knew it I’d already made the whole west side from Blood Country to the Peeninsula.
At that point I figured I should actually find something to do with this map, but there was no way I had the time/motivation to make a real game out of it (someday…). But I was also playing Assassin’s Creed Origins at the time, which has an interesting play mode called Discovery Tour. This mode strips away all the combat, story, questing and other such gameplay elements, leaving the player free to explore the digital recreation of Ancient Egypt at their leisure, optionally reading little tidbits about the landscape, culture and so on. So I thought…why not do something like that for IGNOLand?
No enemies, no combat, no questing, no story. Just a tiny JRPG approximation of IGNOLand for the player to explore, learning about the major landmarks and discovering fun little events as they go. Four weeks and hundreds of hours and resources later, it’s finally finished!!
Of course, the fact that I used RPG Maker’s default resources (and community-made resources in the same style) means that some places don’t look exactly like they would for real. Still, I feel the ability to actually walk from one end to the other of a reasonably-to-scale recreation of IGNOLand provides a sense of scope and immersion simply not possible with a static map image.
I hope you all enjoy the experience – and if you notice any bugs or other things you think should be changed, let me know in Discord!!
